Moving into sheltered housing, a service flat or a care home is a big step, often after decades in the same house. It is not just about carrying boxes. It is about leaving a familiar place behind and feeling at home again somewhere new. A move like this needs patience, attention and time, and that is exactly what we put first.
In this guide you will read what a senior move involves, how we handle the whole thing from start to finish, and what you or your family might want to think about.
What makes a senior move different?
An ordinary move is mostly about speed and logistics. A senior move is about taking the weight off and putting minds at rest. The person moving is usually going somewhere smaller, which means choices have to be made about what comes along. It also matters that the new home feels familiar and safe straight away, rather than weeks of camping between boxes.
So we always work at the resident's pace, with the same friendly team who calmly explain what is happening. Family can help as much or as little as they want to. We take on the heavy lifting and the organising.
How a senior move works with DURA
Getting to know each other and making a plan
We come round with no obligation, look at the current home and the new one together, and talk through what is wanted. What comes along, what does not, and how should the new place be laid out? From that we make a clear plan and agree a fixed price.
Packing and making choices
We pack everything carefully and, if that helps, we sit down and work out what comes along to the smaller home. Treasured things get extra attention. Nothing is thrown away without asking first.
The move, and the furniture
On the day itself we handle the transport, take beds and wardrobes apart, and build them back up in the new home. The resident does not have to lift a thing.
Setting up the new home so it feels familiar
This is the heart of a senior move: we set the new home up so it is recognisable. Furniture in the right spot, pictures hung, bed made, cupboards filled. Wherever we can, we mirror the layout of the old home, so everything feels familiar from the first evening.
Handing the old home back, empty and tidy
Finally we empty the old home and hand it back broom clean to the landlord or estate agent. Anything left over is sold, donated or disposed of responsibly, always after talking it through, so the family has nothing left to chase.
The big advantage: you do not have to line up a mover, a cleaner and someone to take things away. We handle the whole thing with one named contact. That is a relief for the resident and for the family.
For families and referrers
Are you caring for a relative, or do you work in home care or at a care organisation, and are you looking for someone reliable to handle a senior move? We work regularly with client support workers, transfer nurses and estate agents who specialise in older clients across the region. You can refer someone to us with confidence, and we will go through everything carefully with them.
Is there a senior move coming up?
We will come round with no obligation anywhere in Groningen, Friesland or Drenthe, and put together a calm plan and a fixed price.
